Carol Danvers’ Flirty Side and Scarlet Witch's and Quicksilver's Origin Story Part 1: Avenge
Avengers Vol 1 #185: "The Yesterday Quest!"
This issue focuses on Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, we only get to see Ms. Marvel for a few flirty moments.
This issue picks up a few moments after the previous one ended. All of the Avengers standing together on the pier surrounded by the destruction they caused. They are standing in small groups and of course Ms. Marvel is standing with the WASP, all the women together.
The police officer wants the Avengers to pay for the damage. Iron Man tries to explain what happened, but then he realizes that his explanation sounds ridicules, because the Absorbing Man’s powers and action are hard to explain. In the end he just tells the police officer to send the bill to Tony Stark.
Falcon is disappointed that he didn’t get to participate in the action. Contributing to his token feeling. Hawkeye doesn’t understand why, all things considered and the really impressive fight that he had, Falcon gets to be an Avengers he doesn’t. Clint tells the Avengers exactly how he feels, his bitterness and resentment. This is no warm goodbye.
When they return to the mansion Jarvis lets them know that Mr. Gyrich is upset. No one cares or pays any attention to that announcement.
Iron Man leaves and returns as Tony Stark to check the new security system. Jarvis tells him to ask the Avengers what they think about it. Stark goes to the kitchen to get himself coffee and finds Ms. Marvel and Jocasta talking. He bumps into Ms. Marvel and they actually start flirting. Jocasta thinks it’s just boring small talk, but this is not a small talk. It’s strange to see Ms. Marvel as flirty. It’s the first time we see this side of her. But, Stark is the king of flirting, so I guess he can bring out that side in anyone.
Jocasta tries to talk to Vision, but Vision is in his own bubble, worrying about Scarlet Witch. However, he refuses to admit that he can in fact worry at all.
Then the issue switches to something completely different: Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver origin story. Well, I think that this is their first one, it changes with time as it always does in comics.
Wanda and Pietro arrive with their supposed father to Transia, a fictional Marvel country. Wanda and Pietro believe that the Whizzer and Miss America were their parents. Yet, this old man, Django Maximoff, claims he is their father. Wanda feels at home and Pietro is simply confused. His memories have no faces, but they seem to fit the old men’s stories. Wanda’s memories point to the fact that they were born in a mountain in Transia, where their mother dies soon after giving birth. There is a parallel between the stories that needs to be explained.
Modred appears in Wanda’s room and wakes her up. Which is awkward because apparently Wanda likes to sleep naked. He tells her he will help her unravel the past if she will accompany him. He even magically puts clothe on her and they travel together.
They land on Wundagore mountain and get attacked by the security devices of the High Evolutionary. They go in the direction of a structure when they reach an alter with a book floating above it. That is when Modred attacks Wanda.
In the morning Pietro sees that Wanda is gone and runs in search of her. A woman tells him that Wanda is probably on the mountain as there were lights there last night, lights that Pietro says were there the night that they were born. He runs towards and up the mountain and into a barrier which causes him losses consciousness.
When he wakes up a voice tells him that he is safe. The voice belongs to a human cow creature. The creature that helped bring him and Wanda into the world. That is how the issue ends, with Pietro’s shock.
This is the Maximoff twins’ origin story. Ms. Marvel is just a background character and not an important one. Her flirty behavior is unexplained and strange in my opinion. It would make her more likeable if the man wasn’t Tony Stark. I didn’t appreciate it. the Maximoff twins’ origin story is also obviously much more interesting and well told.
