Carol Danvers’ is Not a Significant Part of the Team: Avengers Vol 1 #191– January 1980
Avengers Vol 1 #191: "The Icemaster Cometh"
Ms. Marvel might be a part of the team, but a small part.
The issue picks up right where the previous one ended. With the return of the Grey Gargoyle. He has turn Iron Man and Daredevil into pure stone. Now, Vision attacks the Grey Gargoyle, but the Grey Gargoyle hits him so hard that he goes through a building, in an unsolid form, but still. Scarlet Witch tries to run to his side instead of fighting, that’s not a smart move, she leaves her back exposed. The Gargoyle takes the opportunity to knock her out as well.
Beast is angry that villains treat the ladies of the team badly, by hitting them. Which makes sense as they are in a battle. The Gargoyle throws him straight at Captain America. Then he makes the building collapse on top them while laughing at the notion that the Avengers are Earth’s mightiest heroes.
Ms. Marvel comes for a surprise attack. She has slightly better luck then the rest of the Avengers, but she too is defeated in the end. Despite her military training, and her Kree powers, she is taken out when the Gargoyle bounces back from her attack.
Ms. Marvel is the first to recover from their failed attack. I guess the Kree have good recovering powers. She wonders at her own inconsistent seventh-sense. I have to admit that at this point, I forgot that she even has a seventh-sense as it stopped working the moment she joined the Avengers.
Scarlet Witch is next to recover and then the WASP flies out of a ruined building carrying Beast. The three women standing first. Ms. Marvel removes broken building parts to reveal an unharmed Captain America. Vision recovers all by himself and gets out from being stuck literally inside a wall.
Captain America rushes to Iron Man’s side, he is concerned about him, but he also wants to give Vision and Scarlet Witch some privacy. Apparently, Scarlet Witch has been acting odd since they all returned from Attilan. Captain America finds out that it is only Iron Man’s suit that turned to stone, and Iron Man orders the Avengers to go after the Gargoyle.
Beast notices that Falcon is gone. Falcon is one step ahead of them and he is following the Gargoyle who doesn’t notice someone flying above him. He goes into an apartment even though a woman that we don’t know lives there now. He once rented this apartment in human form, but he has been gone for too long.
The woman tells him that he better have a good explanation for this break in, and this is the part where we get his very boring usual origin story. The usual smart person who gets into a lab accident. He fights Thor to get immortality from the hammer, even though as he discovers, he is already immortal. Then we find out that he went to this apartment because he hid in it special chemicals that should make him stronger. But the new tenant threw them all away.
He is about to attack her when Falcon intervenes. But he is no match for the Gargoyle. He manages to hang in there until help will comes. Help arrives in the form of the Avengers, led by his good friend Captain America. This time they come with a plan of attack, and they successfully defeat the Gargoyle together. Ms. Marvel is the part of the physical force team.
In the Epilogue the Avengers return to the Senate hearing. The Senate renews their priority privilege and gives them more freedom than Mr. Gyrich would have liked. But in the end, the clever Tony Stark is still worried about Scarlet Witch and Vision.
Ms. Marvel is part of the team. She fits in flawlessly. However, her role is a small one. She’s not the leader like Iron Man or has the authorities and leading manners of Captain America, nor does she have a unique set of alibies like Scarlet Witch. Her role is small and not very significant. Even her seventh-sense which could have set her apart and make her a true assent to the team has mysteriously vanished in favor of another hero with just flight and superstrength. I don’t think it will be noticeable if you took her out of the issue, unlike other members of the team.
