Ms. Marvel #16: "The Deep Deadly Silence!"
Ms. Marvel decides that she cannot defeat Tiger Shark alone and she seeks out help. However, instead of going to get The Defenders’ help, because she knows them, she decided to ask for the Avengers’ help. She does state that she needs a sophisticated lab which The Defenders don’t have.

The issue starts with Beast attacking Ms. Marvel in the Avengers’ mansion. Apparently, he thinks that she is a Captain Marvel groupie, ouch. One that even talks like him, which is an interesting revelation – how similar are they?
However, she did go into the mansion without so much as a knock on the door in the middle of the night, which is super rude and stupid.
Apparently, a lot of people have been bursting through the Avengers doors and Beast is tired of it. Ms. Marvel has a snappy response which angers Beast and he throws her away. Her logical response is to throw him out the window. Because superheroes always resolve everything by fighting.
Then Scarlet Witch shows up to help Beast. But, of course that two women manage to talk it out and get things straight. Ms. Marvel apologizes for her rude behavior stating that she sometimes “forget [her] own strength.” Ms. Marvel also tells Scarlet Witch all of the events from the previous issue – how she encountered Wundarr who has the mind of a child and the strength of the hulk, and how she found out that Namorita (Nita), Namor’s cousin, has been kidnapped by Tiger Shark and how she failed to capture him.

Against logic Scarlet Witch decides to trust Ms. Marvel based on her instinct. Inside the lab Ms. Marvel uses her Kree knowledge to build a tracing device to locate Nita and to help herself breathe underwater. Scarlet Witch even brings Ms. Marvel some coffee in the morning as she worked all night. On a side thought, she also rents the apartment that she looked at during the previous issue, without giving away her identity to the Avengers. As Ms. Marvel flies off, Wanda wonders if it was smart to let her go on her own and Beast assures her that Ms. Marvel will be able to win easily.

Apparently, Ms. Marvel has a new mystery villain on top of Tiger Shark. This is building up the new villain before the current one is dealt with. This woman apparently plans to get rid of Ms. Marvel in the future. Something tells me that things are not going to go her way. From some reason seeing the ship that this villain is on reminds Ms. Marvel of Marvel Team-Up where her own cruise did not go as planned. It’s nice that she refers to in within the continuity, while it makes no sense.
Ms. Marvel is both a Kree warrior and Carol Danvers – a human. So, she is both scared and eager for a fight. She follows her newly built sensor and swim down into the ocean. She is close to Nita’s location when Tiger Shark manages to hit her by surprise, even though she was looking for him and even though she has a seventh sense. Tiger Shark seems to have the upper hand. Then Nita is inspired by Ms. Marvel’s courage and tries to fight against Tiger Shark herself, but he takes her out easily. Ms. Marvel goes for him again and fails. She decides that retreating is her best move for now. Tiger Shark follows her and throws a torpedo at her, luckily, it doesn’t explode.
Her bad luck continues as a giant squid catches her. She manages to get away by using flares, which she conveniently took with her. As the squid escapes he releases ink which confuses Tiger Shark. That’s Ms. Marvel’s time to attack him. But her luck runs out again when the alarm goes off that she is running out of air. She continues the fight, she doesn’t kill Tiger Shark, but simply knocks him out with her last breath of air. Literally. She’s sad to die and wishes she could see the sun one last time, then she just passes out.

But in a happy turn of events it is Nita who managed to save Ms. Marvel from drowning. Because even our favorite hero needs saving from time to time. In the end Ms. Marvel gets to look at the sun once more.
This was a fun issue. It’s always great to see the Avengers show up even if it’s a just a cameo. Also in this issue it was nice to see women bonding. Wanda decided to help Ms. Marvel after all and Nita is inspired by Ms. Marvel’s courage. This is a much more subtle way to show what an inspiration Ms. Marvel really is. I loved it. And if she needs saving, I prefer that she will be saved by a woman.
