New Mutants Vol 1 #19: "Siege!"
Binary is part of the Starjammers and is out in space when she notices danger on Earth.
Just a small warning to start with. As you know <i>Fox</i> has filmed a <i>New Mutants</i> movie. The plot of the movie will be based on this issue and next few issues as well. So if you want to know nothing in case the movie ever comes out, you might want to skip this post.
The issue opens with an emergency team leading a woman on a stretcher. The woman, or girl more correctly, is Danielle Moonnstar, a student in Professor Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Her injuries are severe and extensive. We see her friends looking worried as she is rushed into an O.R.
Her friends, the New Mutants, are approached by a police officer. He asks them what happened, but they say that as far as they can see, she was mauled by a bear. Well, that would cause some serious injuries. The officer has a hard time believing there could be a bear around Westchester County which angers one of the New Mutants.
Danielle, the girl who was attacked has no family left. Xavier is her legal guardian, but he is out of town and the terrible snow might hinder his return. The terrible snow also keeps the New Mutants stranded inside of the hospital as well.
One of the members of the team is angry that they can't follow the bear. However, Sam Guthrie says that Dani has always been scared of a bear spirit that murdered her parents. No one believed her, but now that they had some experience with magic, they do believe her story. It does help that one of them, Illyana Rasputina, is actually a witch. Also, Dani has been fighting bears in the danger room for a week and went outside with war paint on her face and a bow and arrow. She was probably preparing to the fight the bear spirit, but failed. Sam thinks that the bear will try to attack Dani at the hospital.
The New Mutants are worried. Sunspot is guarding the O.R. door. Rahne turns into Wolfsbane, her powers are growing and are frightening her and everyone else. Still, she mind links with Dani in this form. Dani tries to communicate with Rahne through the link, but that wakes Dani up which is severely dangerous. Rahne did understand that the bear will come again for Dani. She also managed to pick up that Dani thinks that the bear is scared of hrt, because she has the power to destroy it. But apparently, she didn't use that power against the bear. The New Mutants know that a fight is coming and they all hope that they can keep their own until the Professor and the X-Men arrive.
Out in space the Starjammers are being called into battle positions.
Binary raised the alarm after viewing the scanner. Whatever she sees seems like both a living creature and a vessel of immense power moving towards Earth. While they wonder whether the being is hostile they are suddenly surrounded by blinding light. I guess it is the being on its way to Earth. They are all worried about this entity.
However, they are too far away to do anything about it. Binary states the people that they have close relations to on Earth. Corsair has his children, Alex and Scott Summers, she has her family and Lilandra has the X-Men and Xavier in particular. They want to fight to protect them, but they can't. They are too far away.
Back on Earth, Wolfsbane is mourning the suffering that Dani is going through. The problem is that she forgot that she looks like a werewolf. While she's in the hospital. The officer sees her and tries to shoot her. However, she runs away and transforms back to Rahne. The officer convinces himself that that what he saw was a form of delusion, because he is so tired and the ragging storm outside doesn’t help his sense of sanity either.
The officer goes to the nurse's office to check on Dani's condition. While he is flirting with the nurse the spirit bear appears. It roars and they scream. Their screams awake the New Mutants who just find blood on the floor of the nurses' station and nothing more. Rahne even in her human form can smell the same fowl scent that was around Dani after she was attacked.
Two of the New Mutants were not with them. Roberto and Illyana, they are just outside the O.R.'s doors waiting for news. Also, Illyana casts a protection spell on those doors. The moment of truth has arrived for that spell as the bear appears. Sunspot tries to attack the bear, but he is hit by it. Illyana summons the soulsword. She thinks that her suit stopped the claws of the bear, but sees a metal object attached to her arm instead. She wonders if it is her own flesh turned metal, her sword feels different too. Similar thing has happened to Wolfsbane. Still, she attacks the bear with her sword and he roars with what she hopes is pain.
The bear disappears. The metal on Illyana's arm disappears. She feels that they have won for now, but she is mistaken. The lights go out. The backup generators don't kick in so Sunspot lights the corridor and the O.R. with his power. But the phones are all dead. Looks like the bear is trying to isolate the hospital. The New Mutants split up. Illyana and the girls go to the backup generators room and Illyana puts a protective spell on it, but she is losing power and fast.
Suddenly, Illyana screams and informs the girls that the bear is upstairs. The protection spell she cast on the O.R. doors is a part of her, so she feels the attack on them as if she is being attacked. Unfortunately, the bear can also teleport, so the boys have a serious problem on their hands. Magma hits him with lava and in his anger he lashes out at Illyana. But the injured area just turns into metal again, while she remains unharmed.
The bear is still unharmed. Illyana yells at the other New Mutants to protect the generators as her spells are weakening. However, the bear casts a powerful spell that knocks them all out. When they wake up, they are somewhere else. Somewhere the bear teleported them to. They see that the nurse and police officer are prisoner there as well. And they can see Dani on the operation room. They are in serious trouble. The issue ends here.
It's not a big surprise that this is the <i>New Mutants</i> show. Binary just notices that they are in trouble from space. She is worried about her family, which is odd as her memories of them were damaged. She didn't seem like she cared too much when she left, but apparently she does.
