Carol Danvers is being pushed to the Sidelines: Uncanny X-Men Vol 1 #167– March, 1983
Uncanny X-Men Vol 1 #167: "The Goldilocks Syndrome! (or: "Who's Been Sleeping in My Head?")"
Carol Danvers as Binary has very little to do in this issue other than lend a punch.
The issue stats on Earth with Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. It appears that Xavier is less depressed now and he has five students in his school for mutants. Sam Guthrie a.k.a Cannonball, Roberto da Costa a.k.a Sunspot, Rahne Sinclair a.k.a Wolfsbane, Danielle Moonstar a.k.a Mirage, Xi'an Coy Manh a.k.a Karma. The New Mutants. They are all watching TV when the X-Men come barging in through the walls and creating a lot of damage. It's like they don't live there, but it does looks really impressive as images on paper. Not so much in real life. The new kids have no idea that these are the X-Men and attack them.
Kitty Pryde, Shadowcat, is not with them. She's going after Xavier. He seems to be asleep, but that is merely a diversion. Kitty hesitates momentary and Xavier opens his eyes and tells her that she should have listened to Wolverine and should have shoot instantly. Or Xavier is a jerk like he is occasionally or he is no longer Xavier.
Everyone hear the gun fire and try to break away from the fight to see what is going on. But they don't need to go anywhere as Xavier throws Kitty into the room through the wall. He is no longer Xavier as we see his eyes glowing and wings coming out of his back and his entire body changes to that of the Brood. A Brood Queen.
The New Mutants recognize the threat as apparently they fought the Brood before. They also recognize the X-Men name, though they thought that they have died. The X-Men order the New Mutant to stay back as they are just kids, and like all kids they don't listen. Obviously.
The X-Men attack the Brood queen again. Xavier is no more. Wolverine manages to slice off her stinger, which just enrages her. She strikes him back, hard. All of the other's attacks fail. Completely. This new queen with Xavier's powers is a formidable emery.
She flies away and runs into Carol Danvers – Binary – in the sky. Binary strikes her and Storm freezes her. So she falls to the ground. Like Binary said, there is no escape from the X-Men. Wolverine is the killer and he wants to deal the finale blow. However, Cyclopes insists that he must be the one to do it as he was the professor's first student. A very noble sentiment.
Then suddenly Xavier emerges. For a moment he speaks to Cyclopes and tells him that he has to kill him. For Earth, for humanity, the queen must die. However, hearing Xavier speaking changes Cyclops's mind. He now believes that there is hope, that there is a chance to save Xavier and he wants to take that chance. Like he never did with Jean Grey.
They take Xavier to the Starjammers' ship. The medic crew explain that they will create a clone body for Xavier from the cell sample they have of him from his last stay. Then they will transport his consciousness to his new body. They think it is a long shot, but as readers we know that they will probably be successful.
Kitty wakes up from her comma and is super happy to see Peter and Illyana. Storm is in the background, alone. Kitty doesn't even notice her. Suddenly Storm feels very alone even though she knows that Kitty's emotional development is normal and expected. She feels like an abandoned parent.
Cyclopes, Scott Summers has a heart to heart conversation with his father, Corsair, Christopher Summers. Corsair understands that Xavier was a father figure for Scott and he is jealous of him for that. But Earth is no longer his home and he will not stay and make it his home again. His home is the Starjammers. Still, Corsair will be happy to introduce Scott to his own parents. Scott considers going to space with his father and leaving his younger brother all alone. Maybe he should at least invite his brother to join.
Trouble emerges when the head of Lilandra's imperial guard shows up on the Starjammers's ship. He wishes to speak to his empress, Lilandra. Her mind is in a thousand places, with Xavier and with her people, her duty, and her frail royal status. But there are even bigger threats, Galactus. He was dying and knowingly or unknowingly Reed Richards healed him. Lilandra projects herself to Baxter building, the residence of the Fantastic Four and warns them. If Galactus harms any world known to them, they will be considered as his allay and will be put to Shi'ar trail. She's right, healing Glactus is a super bad idea.
And then the sort of happy ending comes. Xavier is back. He has a new body which is physically capable of standing, but mentally he cannot. The residue of mental pain is there. But everyone are sure that Xavier will get through it and will be able to walk again. He gets a lot of love and positive feedback.
And he returns it by being a jerk. He tells Kitty that she is young, too young. She will no longer be an X-Men and fight, but she will join to New Mutants. Kids her own age who are in training. What a jerk. He doesn't take her opinion into consideration and she has semi-proven herself as an X-Men.
