Uncanny X-Men Vol 1 #150: "I, Magneto..."
Carol Danvers simply has a small cameo in this issue.
The issue opens with Magneto threatening all of the countries on Earth. He tells them they all must surrender their political power to him, or he will change life on Earth as they know it. He also wants all of the countries of the world to disarm their nuclear weapons, a country that will refuse will be destroyed. His motives come from the fact that mutants can be harmed by such nuclear wars.
Russia decides to try and attacks the island that Magneto lives on with nuclear missiles. Magneto neutralizes the attack easily and in retaliation sinks the submarine that fired at the island. He also attacks a Russian city, Varykino, by causing a volcano to rise in the middle of the city. However, he does it slowly so no one is hurt, just property damage.
The X-Men fly to his island on their plane. However, Magneto's field causes their plane to crush. Strom gets injured as Wolverine falls on her, and because of that her powers fail to save the plane. The X-Men aren't even there to stop Magneto, they still don't know that he is there. They are there to look for Scott Summers who is now Magneto's prisoner. He is missing since he got caught in a mysterious storm at sea.
Charles Xavier is on a boat monitoring the plane. He notices that it disappears. Moira MacTaggert and Carol Danvers are with him. The person sailing the boat suggests that amid all the surrounding mystery that they should search in an island in the Bermuda Triangle. The X-Men do get to that island, but their powers stop working as they come near. Colossus nearly drowns. But, they have no other choice.
Summers helps the X-Men create a plan that will destroy the special device that Magneto has created. This device can control the earth's crust and it created the island that they are on and the volcano in Russia. Nightcrawler and Wolverine try to take out the machine, while Storm who has found sleeping Magneto, struggles with the decision of whether she should kill him or not. In the end Magneto wakes up and neutralizes her while realizing that all of the X-Men must be near.
Xavier fights against Magneto's will. However, Magneto unscrews the screws that hold Xavier chair to the boat and when Xavier is taken by surprise, Magneto flies him to the island where his powers will not work, while destroying all electronic equipment on the ship. Danvers just stands there watching in shock and crying for help instead of flying after Xavier. Although I do have to say that at this point we still don't know how much of her powers and her ability to use them has been hurt. It just isn't discussed or explained. After the X-Men destroy Magneto's machine he puts it back together with his powers without a problem and captures all of them.
Storm recovers and destroys the main computers. This also neutralizes the machine that controls mutant powers on the island. They all fight against Magneto as they are also set free.
Kitty Pryde destroys what is still left from Magneto's computers and in his rage he strikes her too hard during their fight. When he sees that he has killed a child he realizes that he became what he hated and tells Storm that she can kill him. In the end though, he disappears and Kitty survives. Xavier tells the X-Men and he and Danvers will repair the yacht to get them off the island. I guess that her technical knowledge has remained. At the end of the day the X-Men won, not just physically, but mentally.
Carol Danvers seems to go wherever Charles Xavier goes. But, she seems like MacTaggert¸ an unimportant human character who is simply there, partially useful, but mostly not. Even without her powers I would expect her to be more impressive than this. Her first appearance in an X-Men comic is a disappointment in my opinion.
