The End of the Carol Danvers, Mar-Vell and Medic Una love triangle: Captain Marvel #11 – March 1969

Captain Marvel #11 – March 1969

Carol Danvers just has a small cameo in this issue. However, in her one appearance we see that she can't believe that Captain Marvel is capable of any wrong doing, even when it happens right in front of her.

This issue picks up right where the previous one left off with Captain Marvel about to be executed. However, he is saved by the bell as the Aakon from #9 are back for revenge and kill all of his executioners. Una comes to warn Mar-Vell that the Aakon are after him. As Marvel fights them he wonders when will a time come when intelligent life forms that will value life "above ego -- justice and right above power?"

Colonel Yon-Rogg is forced to send soldiers to fight the Aakon in order to avenge the death of the Kree soldiers, even if it means helping Mar-Vell.

Medic Una is injured

During the fight Medic Una is hit by a stray shoot. Captain Marvel swears to avenge her and attacks Colonel Yon-Rogg, whom he blames for this tragedy. His nice speech about valuing life is forgotten in a heartbeat. Mar-Vell fights with Yon-Rogg and only stops when he hears Una crying out in pain. Then he flies away with Una, the "fairest of all women". Unlike Snow White, Una's ending is not a happy one.

Mar-Vell wants to leave earth and decides to steal a missile from the Cape. He knows that this will make him a traitor to the earth people, but he doesn't care.

disbelieving Carol Danvers

Now at last we see Carol Danvers, who is shocked and can't believe her own eyes. In order to describe her innocence I will use Captain Marvel words from the previous issue even though he didn't mean them: "you still believe in fairy tales, Miss Danvers -- pure good and utter evil".

However, despite the medical equipment on the missile Medic Una dies and Mar-Vell grieves and promises to carve her a shrine and never forget her. It seems he completely forgot about Carol as he calls the love that he and Una shared "exquisite and complete." He leaves her body on an asteroid near Mars.

Colonel Yon-Rogg catches Mar-Vell ship and with his superior ship tosses it into space so fast that Mar-Vell can do nothing, but float aimlessly into space. After 112 days he reaches a plant where a special ray eases his missile into landing. On that planet he meets Zo, who planned everything so that Mar-Vell will be there, which includes Una's death. That angers Mar-Vell and rightfully so. Despite that, he agrees to serve Zo in return for the power to destroy Yon-Rogg. His new powers include: super-strength, teleportation and the power to project illusions. He also has a new super suit. He ends the issue as a servant of Zo and must return to him once he kills Yon-Rogg.

Finally the love triangle is now over with the death of Medic Una, and it doesn’t seem like the love story between Mar-Vell and Carol will continue. Hopefully now her character will change for the better as the love is completely over. On a side note the love story plot is over one issue after a published letter from a fan said that the entire love plot is terrible. During those days Marvel cared more about what fans has to say, even too much at some points.
